Not sure what this is exactly. Its a thick bulbous growth of what looks to be purple coralline but covered with micro green/yellow polyp like flowers. It came on a piece of live rock and is not recieving light currently. Sorry for poor photo quality. Thank you in advance!

I have no experience/familiarity with sps but could it be some kind of montipora? I have read that this kind of coral requires ample lighting, high flow, and stable water parameters to flourish so the idea of it coming out of a dim lit and low flow LR bin sounds highly unlikely. If anyone can confirm or point me in the right direction of proper identification it would be greatly appreciated. If in fact some kind of sps species, i'd like to get it fragged and replaced in my DT somewhere it will be happy. Thanks again!

    Wish I knew.

Can you move the rock or angle it so it's getting more light? And then take other images.

Do the polyps retract into a stony skeleton when you touch it or in reaction to a change in water movement, try blowing a turkey baster at it or waving you hand?

You can rule out a stony coral by touching it to see what the base is made of.

Haven't tried that yet so notes taken. I'll try to get a reaction using said methods and make an attempt to capture clearer/multiple photos as soon as i finish teaching. Thank you Corailline for the advice/direction.

*This particular rock came from a LFS here in Miami.

Porites Astreoides matches extremely well. My specimen would be considered its intermediate depth growth form and is slightly bigger than a dime. Texture is very stoney including the micro polyps but no part of it reacts in any way to touch or change in water flow. Perhaps it's just a skeletal remain. In the end I think I'll be leaving it right where it is.

(Ended up reading the entire link. Thanks again Corailline!)
