Do you experienced members put a dark sheet as background on the back of the tank or leave it clear. Read something to the effect that this will not create stress for the fish. Is this true?

Some fish do not like there reflction on the glass. I personnaly use a black backing on my tanks. But its up to you... youll get different opinions just here on 3reef. Some use that plastic sheet on the back some paint the back of the tank some leave it clear... so do what you like.

I have black Aquarium plastic on my tank. Some have Blue and others paint the back.
I have also seen tanks run with nothing, when used as room dividers.
I believe the propose is to eliminate stressing the fish by not having movement visible on all 4 sides

Mine is black, I have seen blue or other colors. I really think it should be based on personal preference instead of some technical reason. Just my .02

I use blue, because whenever I posted pics, everyone said, "you can see all your wires hanging in the back!" ;D

Mine's clear, but I haven't been able to see the wall for a long time ... totally coraline encrusted.

I have used a mirror for the back of my FOWLR tanks for years. The fish dont seem to mind it. Ocassionally a fish will see its reflection and get worked up but I dont think it stresses them out. I think it makes life a little more interesting for the fish rather than just swimming back and forth. It also adds light to the tank by reflecting the light back into the tank. Most auto glass companies will cut a mirror to size. My 120g has a 60" 1/4 thickness mirror for $60.00
