Hello all, about 2 weeks ago I made a question mark shaped pvc pipe to hang over the tank during water changes so that I only have to watch the low end. Well I used it for one water change and had no ill effects, but I recently noticed that if I use my mouth to suck air through the pipe....it still smells strongly of pvc cement. Could this have a harmful effect on my tank inhabitants? As I said I haven't noticed any harm done since the first water change but I wanted to ask those with more experience before I did it again. I have no doubts that the cement has cured....but I have no ideas on how to get rid of the smell. Thanks!

Assuming it is dried, PVC cement is not harmful. I have never checked to see if uncured pvc cement still has a smell though.

I typically let it dry for about 20-30 minutes, then run tap water through it a few times. After that, I plumb it into the system. I've never experienced any ill effects from doing it like this.

Well I'm sure it has fully cured since it was done about 2 weeks ago and that stuff typically cures fully within 30 minutes to an hour. I used the same stuff to put together the drains of my overflows and haven't seen any ill effects so I'm going to assume it's all harmless. I just found it odd that when I suck air through it like a siphon I get a horrible cement taste from the air inside it. Oh well I suppose. Thanks for your input!

I know when I bought mine I went with the type that is safe for drinking water. It should say on the label if it is safe.

I just picked up some off the shelf at Lowe's.......if what they're selling isn't safe for drinking water then there are going to be a LOT of sick people in this world.

Edit: Says "For Potable Water". That's good enough for me.
