PVC elbow into nozzle......

    Since I've switched over to my sump/SCWD setup I've noticed more cyano in my tank. I need to increase my flow and I think the way to do it is to take the 90 degree PVC elbows I have as return and make them into nozzles...
    I remembering seeing somewhere that if you toss PVC in the oven for a while it'll get soft enough to crimp into a flattened nozzle shape. Anyone know what temperature and for how long? Advice on proceeding? :confused:

    PVC pipe starts to soften around 167 deg F depending on how it's modified. I'd put it in a 170 - 200 deg oven & check it every minute or so. You might also try an electric heat gun.

    By modifying your nozzel you are not creating any more flow unless you are changing to a larger pump. All you are doing is creating pressure like a water hose nozzel does and that will bleach coral if you are blasting water at them. I take it you are just wanting to move more water in the area you have?? :-/ Try one of these Penductor/Educator: Premium Aquatics if you want to move more water. They claim that for every 1 gallon you push through the nozzel it will pick up and move 4 gallons of water. Just like a blow gun with compressed air. I have two of them and they work great if your pump is maxed out and you still want to move more water.

    My thoughts are the same at Otty.
    You can also shape the pvc by using a blow tourch and pliers.

    I guess my thoughts were that if I decreased the diameter of the return by making it into a nozzle shape that I would increase the force of the water coming out and bouncing off the front glass of the tank. Figured that might cause the water to reach more parts of the tank...
    PVC elbows are cheap...I'll heat one up and slap it on and see if it helps...

    I heard that eductors need a pressure rated pump. Can you run it on a strong regular pump?

    I run mine on a Little Giant model 4 and it does great.

    Why not use LocLine? I have 1/2" locline connectors on bothe ends of my scwd return. Works great. I also have anothe line that I branched off before the scwd for constant flow.

    BTW, flow should not be the cause of your cyano. Yes, cyano will more easily grow in low flow, but only in the presence of phosphates. Look into getting some ROWA phosphate remover. Worked great for me. Also removes silicates.

    Just insert a bushing that will increase the pressure.. Smaller the opneing the more pressure. But its volume you want not pressure.. I'd think a larger pipe and maybe pump depending on what you now use.

    I'm running a MAG 7 up thru the SCWD and have 3/4" returns...
    I'm also using RO water so I didn't think I'd have a big phosphate issue...
    We shall see...
