Christies Red Hot Blue Glue is totally safe. Glue both sides and there really isn't a need for primer IMO. We've built many, many systems with the stuff, and it works great. For the record, when dealing with glues/sealers/etc, make sure they are approved for potable water and you should be safe.

If you are good at priming you will only see a slight purple ring and you will know for certain that you did in fact primer that joint even way after the gluing is complete, or thought to be complete. I had one joint that I thought I had glued, but the lack of the tiny purple ring told me otherwise. Also, if you are doing more than one joint at a time, the purple primer is better.

Clear primer is still far better than no primer. Not using any primer is a leak waiting to happen. how can you be assured that there is no oil or other foreign residue on the PVC if you don't primer it? Granted we don't have crazy psi on our pipes, but using a little primer is a safe step that I would never exclude. I worked at my father's plumbing and boiler shop a few years back.

I hear that you are supposed to wait 24 hrs before using a newly glued PVC joint, but plumbers use freshly made joints all the time, and many reefkeepers employ freshly made glue joints as well with no issues.

always used it instantly with no problems. pretty fool proof stuff, but some people like to be more cautious than others. nothing wrong with that.
