I've been working on a FOWLER set up (maybe doing some reef later). I currently have a 29 gal drilled with an overflow and return going to a 10 gal sump below and a hand built 7 gal fuge on the back. (I will post pictures later) I've bought argonite sand, mixing live and "dry" in a 1:3 ratio. I have 18 lbs of live rock from the LFS in the tank right now to cure and start cycling. To provide ammonia I added a table shrimp and have been letting it decay.

I have been reading 3reef throughout this process and before I get the last of the rock and settle on a aqua scape was wondering if people think that raising the rock off the sand is necessary.

Also, with a filter sock, protein skimmer, and a cheto fuge do I need any other types of filtration? In other words should I add bioballs, or reactors with phosban or charcoal?

    Cheers,

You seems to be well on your way. After your cycle I would add some charcoal.

+1 and Phosban (or GFO) depending on algae issues and phosphate levels.

Good plan, I have raised my rock on PVC. It will allow more surface area for nitrogen cycle and reduce dead spots in your circulation.
