Well I have had my clown in my QT for a week now, he was treated with Ich Gaurd successfull and has shown now signs of spots for a few days. My question is, all my other fish died from the disease. I am planning on leaving my display fishless for at least a month. I have also read that one should QT new additions for around 2-3 weeks. Is it ok to add new fish to the QT with the clown that was infected? This was I can add them back to the display tank at the same time. My LFS has all fish at 30% off right now cause they are moving. I figured I could QT the new ones and let my clown recover at the same time while waiting on all the parasites to die off over the next month in my display and save a few bucks. Any thoughts?

I had the same thought, but if you think about it long enough, it really just sounds like a bad idea.

Yes we want to QT new fish and some even treat with the same treatment, but it is really just too risky when you think of it.

The hardest part of this hobby isnt the hobby itself, but taking it slow. At least for me aanyway.

    Cheers

no as there is different "phases" of the disease, you might be risking the new fish to the disease. Plus the clown is in a weakened state right now and if you bring in new fish they could bring in disease to him

It is quite possible that the fish will/still has ich as the medicine only works during the "free swimming stage" of the disease..which only lasts about 3 days. There are stages where the disease is not visible to the eye and the medicine is not effective, however the disease is reproducing like bunnies.

that is why it is recommended not to add more then 1 fish to a QT tank ideally. But you shouldnt add fish to a qt tank that you know has had the disease.

Trust me...I have learned the hard way about ich. Not worth the risk to save 30% because you will spend much more then that

fair enough, so I wait a month until I return the clown to the display, then buy one fish and QT him for a few weeks before adding him to the display. Do I have to totally drain the QT after the clown goes back to the display, or just a water change?

the source I use suggest bare bottom with sponge filter and that you should drain the tank and the tank cleaned if there was any sign of disease and/or treatmend during QT. Carbon should be run if medication was added at the very end of the QT cycle to make sure all medication is removed from the filter sponge.

The only thing that should be in the tank is a piece of PVC tube for the fish to hide in. It did state that if the fish was a sand sifter then and only then you could add substrate to the tank.

    This is what I use?
