    1. Why does a qt tank need not be cycled? I just read someone saying that it doesn't need to be, and had a friend tell me the same thing?

    2. Do you only get die off from rocks and other things you put in the water? or can you get die off from just what is in the water?

    3. Can I always keep my QT tank full of water ie using the water from my my water changes to fill it?

It is a dry heat, yeah right !
Keeping a running QT is ideal. I would not use water from any other system, because the possibility of introducing a pathogen defeats the purpose. I myself keep a tank running just for QT.

+1 on that. I keep a Chromis in my qt tank. it likes to swim with my new additions and eases the tension. But it took like 3 weeks for my tank the cycle. I used old water from my DT tank to start it and the first few fish initially died. and then later i had an actual issue in my DT.

+1 on what Corailline said. It's easy to set up and maintain as long as you do WC when you do the WC's for your DT. I should have a QT, but don't at the current moment. I got frustrated and took it down. I would forget about the QT and the WC's on it & I let it go. Unfortunately now I am stuck with the mess of cleaning it p. But I will be able to reuse it. Fortuneately I never got tho the point where I needed to QT any fish..

A proper QT or hospital tank is going to be as controlled as possible. This means having live rock and damsels defeat the purpose.

Artificial decorations are used because they are non-porous. Live rock and sand are pretty porous and can hold medications and critters you don't want.

I use water from my display, not going to be an instantly cycled tank that way though. It will still cycle a little. Use of live rock will make this more intense. Anything carried over from the display tank should be annihilated with meds and/or hypo.

I suppose you can use sand and live rock but, then it would just be tainted stuff if you use copper.

I don't understand why one would have fish in a QT that don't need to be QT'ed. That defeats the purpose.

I would go with no rock & no sand, you can use artificial decorations(as missionsix says) or even PVC for hideouts. That way the fish feels safe, but you can still check on it.
