I need to set up a QT tank, small like a 10g. What equipment do I need? Do I need it up and running all the time, or just before bringing a fish home? Also how do I compensate for not having it cycled? Thanks in advance.

Welcome, you can take some water out of your main display, does'nt really matter about having any sand, just make sure the salinity and temp is as close to the display tank as possible, and put a couple of rocks in there to give the fish somewhere to hide, and add a small powerhead...

To give you an idea, my qt is simply a 25 gallon Rubbermaid container, a cheap air stone protein skimmer, and a powerhead, cheap but effective.
