Great tank, nice and clean....love the aquascape and the Queen Angel, or is it a Blue? About your current skimmer, you may have better performance if you get the foam head where it's up into the skimmer cup neck. You may need to raise the water level the skimmer sits in to do that. I also think that if you get credit for that skimmer at your LFS, that you should just let it ride and use it on other dry goods or livestock. You don't want to limit your choices because of that. Order what you want from an online vendor. Check for coupon codes, most of the larger venders offer additional 10% sometimes more.

Ok so the queen, emperor, cinnamon clown, and puffer fish are getting 86'd tomorrow.

I'm just gettin ready for some serious reef dedication.

    Orphek's should show up tomorrow.

going to order the Vertex RX6 Duo Calcium Reactor.

After that APEX JR and maybe some MP40's.

I think MP60 is waaay too loud. any suggestions?

This is a great thread, thanks to everyone contributing!

I've been weighing pump return options for about two weeks for a 90 build and that last comment really makes so much sense, that should be the golden rule of return rate (with considerations for running other things off return, as well as height of return ,of course).

I do want to push further and ask, assuming one CAN calculate how much water their skimmer skims, and consensus settled on 100 gph for the fuge (though turnover would be a better rule of thumb given some have 50 gallon fuges vs 15 I'll have; suggestions for me?), would you stand ny this if you have charcoal in your sock? Since the sump is sort of the pitt-stop/hospital of you water, would it be a good use of energy to exceed your skimmer's capacity to allow each gallon of your tank's water to pass through the sock as many times as is reasonably efficient? Or am I running charcoal all wrong, this way just makes sense to me (in the sock)? :)

Not sure I get you, but if you are doing it the way I think you are you are doing it all wrong. Carbon is very soft. Any tumbling around will wear it down. Carbon needs to be run in a reactor or in a bag left in the sump. the carbon will get plenty of flow in a sump without passing water through it like putting it in a sock. Obviously reactors are more efficient.

I ran carbon in a reactor and just set it in the sump... the pump for it will circulate water, it will move what it will move, the tank over days will all make it through and the water will be purified. No need for special once through approaches.

I would always go for multiple votechs over single Vortechs... so 2-3 MP 40s over one MP60 with a 10 or 40 for sure.

Plus with multiple pumps of the same size you can just keep one set of spare parts and be good to go.

The SWC 300 cone is huge!

Im shy 1" getting it in so I have to empty my sump tilt it to gain an inch and get it in.

Will post pics tomorrow. It's going to be a very tight squeeze and this is in a 70 gallon sump...

    Nice!

I would clean my skimmer every so often, but even after I did it I wondered why I wasted my time. The pump needs to be cleaned and the cup, but the body can stay there no problems.
