Quarantine Tank? FW Dip? Is it all really necessary?

does this have to be done in a tank or could it be done in a bucket (maybe a dumb question :-/) and would the tank need to have a pump and everything running through it just like the DT? its pretty obvious i dont know much about it...

IMO, this is much like car insurance (ignoring that it's legally required). For most of us, it will rarely be useful, but it is always useful at the same time. Depending on your point of view.

It's just a layer of insurance. I know if I didn't maintain car insurance I'd probably (hopefully) drive more defensively. In much the same way, since I don't have this layer of protection in my scenario I don't impulse buy or buy things from untrusted sources. I am not implying this plan is full proof. But I am comfortable with the risk.

The only incident I have had was with frogspawn. About, I don't know, 8 months after having it started to sprout vicious sponge growth (some of you might remember those threads).

Here's the thing though, it wouldn't have been useful to QT. Additionally, this coral got a FW dip due to this sponge and the sponge was not affected at all. But guess what was? The frogspawn was pissed for weeks. Now, I just live in peace with the sponge.

Seems like a lot of effort and trouble to me. Not for me.

The satisfaction and relief of catching something in QT is worth it to me.

I found myco in some new arrivals. Glugea is some others. If that stuff had of gotten to my stock..... And these guys would have passed the visual inspection test and looked to be in excellent condition. And then time passed.......

I guess it comes down to how replaceable you think your current fish are.

i never really thought of it like car insurance but that is definitely true i mean you need it but you don't its just there in case... but im leaning more and more towards not worrying about doing it i mean if anything ever did happen i would know exactly where to do to get it figured out ;)

well if i knew what myco or glugea was then i would probably be a lot more affected by the fact that you found them in your additions, but i am not really sure i actually want to know what they are :-/ it might just scare me enough to start taking these steps haha and don't get me wrong i don't want to cause any harm to the fish, but im just not sure why i still don't really feel inclined to do it

Because you haven't experienced a great enough loss yourself or what you currently have is replaceable.

i mean i guess its probably the first one because a lot of the corals i have are really not very replaceable i would really freak out if anything happened to them

All I can say is when you have to sit there and helplessly watch several of your 10" to 14" in Monti's slowly get eaten by Monti Nudis and then all die (like I did, when I first started) you will be at the pet store buying everything needed to set up your first quarantine tank, no matter what the cost!

No. The two survivors were a hi fin red banded goby and a banggai cardinal. Among the dead, from the ich: 2 cleaner gobies, 1 occ clown, 1 rainford goby, the kole. I had a blue spot jawfish that jumped and died literally the day the wave of ich that killed everything else came around (you know, how it shows up for 3 days, disappears for a month, reappears 10x worse...); make of that what you will.
