Quarantine Tank? FW Dip? Is it all really necessary?

The guy burning ants is likely burning an invasive species, thanks to the way people do things.

    you could still get shingles;D

after you get chicken pox it lies dormant in your spinal column for the rest of your life, some times it reactivates into shingles(especially when your immune system becomes weak).

personally I think there are alot of similarities between this and ich, all it takes is the fish to become weakened and ich will get the upper hand.

I'm with raven on this issue. No, you haven't beat chicken pox. You become immune to it, though it could com back(this is very uncommon though).

QT/HT's should still be kept when our tanks are fully stocked. Inhabitants could end up getting a parasite, illness or the like, from say a coral loving inhabitant, growing on it. They cold also become aggressive &/or stressed.

I won't argue with the tap water, as even I use it still.

No one claims, "you are a failure", or "you won't make it", w.o. a QT/HT. But it is highly recommended.

No, most FS's do not quarantine, which is why I believe we should. Who knows what parasite/illness your new fish/other inverts could have? We're taking precautions. No one said it was a "must" or that you "have to do it."

Ya'll are missing my point entirely.

Your hummer/global warming analogy is off mark. I'm not saying it's no big deal (warming or taking fish from the reef), it is. I'm saying I'm not doing so much to it with my Ford Ranger 4 cylinder (my fish keeping is hardly to the point of being compared to a hummer). I could go hybrid, but my Ranger is still not making a dent. Besides, even in the GW debate, Hummers are a fun latch point, but they are nothing compared to industry. In the same way, the fish I lose are not a big deal.

The fact that the LFS isn't responsible with QT is not, in any way, an argument on why we need to "be responsible" by doing it... by the time I get it, it's already past that point. It doesn't make any different in the world at that point.

Through the processes of not QT'ing I've lost, I don't know, <10 fish (all of which were quite some time after introduction anyway), compared to the LFS that loses hundreds (or receives hundreds already lost) a month. (or however many they get, I have no idea).

Me not QT has no impact on the reef. I'm a small cog in this clock of a hobby. You are missing the forest for the trees here.

Perhaps we use the word "beat" differently. But if I'm sick with something and then I'm not, I'd call that beat. Whether or not it's due to an immunity, I don't see as being relevant... Whether or not I or a fish is 'likely' to catch is also not at all relevant, that's just white noise... but that is a semantic argument and don't really give a hill of beans about it.

I don't see where you get off implying I am irresponsible for not having one. Which you did twice in your quote/reply. And then act like you're not one of the folks acting like you're doomed to failure if you don't use one... You are that guy. Sorry to call you on it. (irresponsible=failure).

Nice how you had to soap box the tap water too. Makes the point nicely. But I too advise using RO/DI and I'd advise a sump and even a QT. But I won't at all imply you're being irresponsible for not using any one of those things as not a one of them are a requisite to a successful tank. Helpful, yes. Requisite, no. And that's why I find it irritating when one doesn't merely recommend it but finds the need to argue every point as if they're wrong and not just a different way of going about it.

QT and HT are different. That's why they have different names. You can go nuts with chemicals and medicines in one that you wouldn't want to do in the other. I'm not saying one can't interchange the tank for both activities if they want - but they have very different purposes. A HT is useful for when you have an already weakened fish and you want to stress the crap out of it chasing it around the DT, freaking all your other livestock out, so you can then move it to a different tank. The QT is useful if you don't want to put your purchase in your DT for several months.

Yeah, seano, I get your point too... nobody said those exact words, but by indicating failure is imminent without doing it, that it is irresponsible not to use one and so forth, one is implying those words.

I know of a few LFS's that QT their fish. I did. My QT Warehouse had 2 3000 gallon ponds that acted as a common sump for all of the 40gallon breeders that were drilled and drained into the common sump. (The third pond was for QT'ing corals). The water from the "pond/sump" rain through 12 industrial UV sterilizers before hitting a MRC skimmer. I also had a bank of independent hospital tanks in case a fish arrived sick. Whenever I took fish out of QT and to the store, they were free of any parasites and eating well. The reason I could do this was because one of my partners owned the warehouse. The reason most stores don't do this is because if they had to pay rent each month for a QT facility, they would have to raise the prices on their fish so much that people would just go to a competing LFS.

I lost all but one of my fish to an outbreak of ich. I think the ich led to a secondary infection of some kind, but it happened fast. I lost 6 fish in a 5 year old reef tank in 3 days! If you feel you have an obligation to the well-being of your livestock, you'll understand how terrible this can be. Think about it.

Amyloodinium...? (That's the faster one, right?) Seems to be like ich, slightly smaller spots, spreads like wildfire?

Ok so lets not argue about whether or not my fish have beaten ich or have formed an immunity to it, the fact remains the same, in a year and 1/2 my fish are healthy and I have not lost one to ich. Im my 30g tank I had the same success for over a year before I tore it down. As for the QT its like Peredhil said, it might be a good idea, but why do so many people have to argue that it is there way or the highway?? As seen in this post many people have successful tanks with out QT's. I am one of them. I admit they can be a plus for a tank, and maybe should be recommended, but they are not needed.
