I am setting up a quarantine tank/frag tank and I was wondering if I can use a sponge filter in the tank or if that is not okay for SW. Also, the sponge had been in a freshwater tank for about 4 months but has since been removed and dried up. Are there any special steps I should take before using the sponge again?

    Thanks in advance

I myself wouldn't run the sponge that has been in a freshwater tank even though it has been dried out, all that did was kill any bacteria off and left the minerals, copper and such behind from most likely tap water. What are you wanting to do with the Q tank? If have another fully cycled system then that's what it is with new sponge. If use it only when need it then I would get a new foam replacement and you can do two things here, use it when needed as un-cycled with water changes very often for weeks or put the foam in your cycled system somewhere to seed it and insert it into the Q tank which them becomes a hybrid system and will help recuce your WC. Either way no I would not use that sponge.

Soak it in some bleach for about 20min, rinse very well and then let it air dry for 24hrs. Good to go.
