    It is a dry heat, yeah right !
    Coralline comes in many colors. Initially it's a bright fluorescent green, and progressing to pink to purple. When it fades or dies back it can become grey or white and actually flake off, but I do not think that is what is happening.

    And yes GSU is right an image might help in addressing the issue more specifically.
