Ah now it makes more sense. In that case I would jam a ton of rock in there and put either mangroves or calerpa in with it. Mangroves roots will grow around the rock just fine and not need as much growing room as chaeto would. Calerpa will attach nicely to the rock, and it also sucks up nitrates well.

Keep the pictures coming. Specially after you get the rays in. I've been planning my shark and ray tank for awhile now (in my head:))

I have a question to ask. What is the size of the tank and sump in inches?
Apparently with a stingray you are looking at a predator tank. Will there be an area with corals? What are some of the other creatures you have or have planned? I've never had a stingray aside from the one I caught on a hook but I do know as you say they need sandy areas. They do get big don't they? I've had a predator tank with triggers tangs puffers and harlequin tusk fish so I understand it to a degree. What your doing looks interesting I want to build my own sump/refugium for my 210g reef. I like the one I have but I like to look at things in the second dimension so to speak. I do like projects that take thought and careful planning. I'll keep watching.

the tank is 60x24x24 and the sump is 48x18x20 although the water level will be about 17in, i will be moving my urchin and my coral banded shrimp into the sump as they may become food, and in the display tank there will be a couple of zoas and coralimorphs a BTA as well as 3 black clowns a yt blue damsel, bi colour blenny a coral beauty and tellow tangand from what i have read they should be safe, the ray will be about 3 inches when i get him so im hoping that as they grow together they will get along well. i have read they get to roughly 12 inches when mature excluding the tail. haha as for thought and planning it has been slow going the whole build is centred around the ray and its needs, so its taken a lot of research and finally there is a light at the end of the tunnel

60x24x24 = 150 gals. Nice size tank but you'll have to monitor the stingray as it matures. Those are mighty small fish to be around a stingray. Instincts are instincts.
    The stand looks professional! Excellent!

yeah i will be watching closely, the reason i want one so small is they are relatively slow growing so hopefully by the time he get to a size big enough to hunt down the fish i will have moved him into a larger species tank. But from what i have read they usually leave fish alone unless they are sick or distressed, so i was thinking of leaving live feeder shrimp in there and letting him hunt those.
