I have a few questions about koralia powerheads in regards to my 40g breeder tank. Assuming that I'm going the whole nine yards with corals and anemone...

    1. ...how many units would be sufficient?

    2. ...how many GPH per unit?

    3. ...are there different flow rates that are ideal for different creatures? In other words, is it possible to have a flow rate that is ideal for pretty much anything one might add to a reef tank? Or is that wishful thinking?

I've done searches and haven't come to a definitive conclusion on this matter.

    Thanks,
    Doratus

I had a 45 and ran a pair of K2's. I think they are around 750GPH each. Worked very well for softies, leathers, and LPS. It was enough to keep SPS alive, but not really thrive.

I recently upgraded the flow in my 30 gallon cube.
I am now running about 2200 gallons/hour in there for nearly 100X turnovers/hour after you account for the actual volume of water in the tank.

That being said, if you have a DSB you probably have about 25-30 gallons/water with no DSB maybe 30-35 gallons. So let's call it 30 gallons.

If you are going to go with a nem' and you want the ability to keep/grow out SPS you will want at least 60X/hour so 1800 gallons.

For that size, I would go with 3-4 of the Koralia Nano 425's. They are nice and small so they hide in the tank and still move a good ammount of water. Depending on what your return/filter is you will do very well with 3-4 Nano 425's IMHO.

The reason for multiple powerheads is to disperse the flow, so it's not all going one direction. In a 40, it works well to have one on the back left, and one on the back right, facing forward and slightly toward the surface, and possibly one in the center facing slightly up.

I would go with 4 425's. Placed it the corners pointing to the middle. Point a couple toward the surface.

My Fluval 305 is running at about 200gph. A CPR skimmer in the mail will be about 250gph. Tomorrow I will be purchasing 2 koralia 425's.

This puts me at 1300gph. I think that's pretty good for now considering I don't have a single coral. :D

In the near future I can grab a couple more koralia's and call it good!

    Thanks for the input!
