    canister filters deplete the oxygen in the tank. because the aerobic bacteria need oxygen to break down ammonia and nitrates. i believe saltwater carries less oxygen then fresh. thats why alot of people don't use canister filters. a skimmer would help oxygenate the water and be more effective then a canister filter

    let add make sure you research skimmers before you buy if you are planning on getting one.
    some aren't very good. this is one of those cases where brand does matter.
    basic recommendations octopus or coralife there are other good ones but i don't have expierence with those
