plates have a centralized mouth which the feeder tenticles use to capture food, much like an anemone. if these tenticles are with drawn, and the coral doesnt "puff" up when feed with good food then it is under feed and dying. These critters also require good lighting- for lean times, so to speak - they can use photosynthetic requirements to subside what is needed, for a short time, but I have found this effects coloration only. It is widely written that plates require no feeding- this is incorrect, as I have kept mine for over 6 years and believe me he prefers a meaty meal over light (photosynthetic diet) any day- feeding them will greatly increase growth, And over all health.

Ask yourself - why would a/any coral have a mouth if it only relied only upon photosynthetic feeding?
