Although I dont diagree that RO/Di is way to go but it is neither cheap to buy or to run and maintained. Why dont you call your DEP/Water Co for your tap water Anaysis to see make sure that your water is not too hard (high mineral contents) otherwise it will be pretty expensive to run and maintained as with Well Water.
Until evaluation is done, can use API Tap Water Purifier which is about $40 to start uo the tank. Again no filter is efficient if water has too much dissolved solids.

If decide to use RO/DI, you can collect rejected/waste water to use for other purpose (watering lawn, laundry, etc) so you dont just waste water you paid fof.

Buying a system is the only way to go IMO! Make sure you get one with a DI cartridge also, not just RO. A RO/DI is a great investment IMO.

RO/DI is a must for any reef keeper. It will save you time and money.

Now i have a 8 stage RO/DI unit and i change the filter when the TDS out of the RO unit is more than 0 even before it hits the DI stages.

If all the filters are new it gives me about 500 gallon before one of the DI is depleted and 1000 gallons before i have to change the first sediment filter.

My tap water is 105 -120 TDS. I change the 5 micron and .5 micron carbon filter every 6 months. Thinkin about adding 1 micron between the 5 and .5 ...will make a nice 9 stage unit :)

There is no point in calling them, it's almost guaranteed that you have phosphate and nitrate in your water, and they won't be able to tell you the TDS reading at your house. Get an RO/DI or you will regret it!!! I wish I would have done it sooner!

You can turn them off, it's pretty simple really. I already told you call the guys at The Filter Guys and they will explain everything to you, down to replacement costs and everything you need to know and more.

Depending on your tap water and aquarium size the filters could last 2-3 years.
I'm thinking I may get a year and a half out of mine.
    Convenience is worth something too.
