Hello everyone. First off HAPPY NEW YEAR!!!!!! On with the show. I just bought a xenia frag last night as well as a green star polyps and they looked really healthy. The star polyps opened up right away this morning but the xenia is in a ball. Is this normal due to acclimation process or could it be dying. Thanks everyone in advance.

give them some time, i just got a xenia piece and green star polyps, and mine is opposite. My green star polyps aren't open yet, but my xenia is fully open. Give your coral about a week, if its not open by then there may be something wrong

    Happy New Year to all!
Yes, many times you have to give a particular coral some time to get acclimated to the new ambient surroundings!

Xenia is a hit or miss in aquariums. I had it go crazy in my tank and fragged a bunch for people and about 70% took fine and the other 30% just withered away. It seems to do better in tanks with higher nutrients imo. Give it some time though. Hth.

Xenia are weird. Just move from one place to another in tank and they may shrivel up and die...

I have found that when they start to shrivel up, they are usually gonners. You can try chopping them off at base and see if you can trigger new growth.

Sometimes they are doing great and growing/multiplying like crazy --- then they all of a sudden stop and some die off...probably due to some change in tank conditions. They are extremely sensitive to light and flow changes.

    Good Luck!

Thanks everyone. They did extend and look like there doing good. Are the little flower things on the end supposed to be open or closed or some where in the middle. They open here and there but are mostly about half way open.

    Iodine

    HI,
I read on more than one forum Xenia is very unpredictable, it has seasonal cycles like some algae, with die offs and so on.
I have also seen mention of trace elements and maybe needs iodine traces , this can be a problem if carbon is in the loop cause it removes iodine rather well.
    Good luck.
My softies are doing great, if it don't work out get a small frag of stars or some of the zoanthids there are numerous colorful mushrooms too,I like easy to care for softies.
