Go to Walmart and get the cheapest kind that they have. Just make sure that it's 100% clay and is unscented. It will cloud your tank up until it settles but that's nothing to worry about.

PS. I have just been advised that the kind that we use in our systems is the WalMart brand and is in a big red bag. :)

I use no substrate in a sump only in a refugium. As Told my Amcarrig wal Mart brand in a big red/orange bag say 100% clay and that in a few weeks will become valuable magic Mud :) all the same elements and all just like the expensive aquarium stuff.

That's the value of mud as opposed to super fine sand substrate?

It must be since so many pay what ever it cost for magic mud :) Thats all one or the other is.. Fill a huge tube with the kitty litter add lots of sand/mud fauna add some time and soon you can also sell magic mud. For what ever they charge for it.. I have used sand and kitty litter and the litter adds a bit of buffering and will also help with
de-nitrification and PO'4 a bit better then just sand.. When I was working with DSB and plenum's yrs ago we found that a inch or two capped with 3 inches of fine sand worked very well at adding a few month months to the systems life span with far less problems until the end..

The litter will cloud the tank for a few day and it will clear.. And you may see coralline growth also as the clay has everything it needs.. As with the magic mud look at the fine print it says you will need to replenish the exhausted element. What they mean is you will need to buy more mud later on.
