I have a 48in 55g tank. It has a piece of plastic going across the middle and I want to cut it off... how important is this piece to the stability of the tank? or is it just to hold the glass lid?

That is a standard 55g tank. Keep that plastic frame in there. It is crucial to the strength of the tank. With longer pieces of glass that center brace keeps the tank from "bowing" when water pressure is applied.

thanks brother! I guess i'll just have to move the lights. the hanging light (moonlight) shines directly over it and it drives me nuts lol... i was about to cut it and said hhhmmm...let me double check with fellow reefers before I ruin everything lol..

I believe that plastic frame adds some stability to the joints also.

Yes it does. The center brace on my 55 had snapped and I had talk to one of the lfs. The lady there tells me naw its fine you can still use it. That brace is just to hold up the lights. so I went home filled the tank back up and watched the glass bow. Drained the tank again, went to a different lfs and bought a 75. Since then I reglued the brace but dont trust it much and only fill it half way. Perfect for my baby turtle.
