Way back when, when purple tangs were still relatively new and cost $139.99 each I decided one January first that I would go to petco and plunk down the money.

They bagged one, I brought it to the register and it rang up $18. Of course I informed the cashier of the mistake and she said she knew it was a mistake but since it rang up that way she'd let me have it. So I asked if she could wait a second while I went and got another :D and she said no cause she'd end up getting fired. Worth a try though.

Shame they don't have a tighter grip on things.

As far as getting out of the saltwater side, not likely seeing as how they just launched a whole new program with saltwater.

They might not be in general, but I know for a fact a few do not carry saltwater anymore, and it looks like the one here will not be carrying it much longer.

Yes I am in missouri, however I am in Cape Girardeau, about 2 hours south of you buddy. The store manager told me that they were going to be getting rid of the salt water at our local store. I gave her my number and said when they do call me and I will proably clean out their stuff for pennies on the dollar. She said that they don't have many people coming in for salt water stuff so I will proably get it all. I will believe that when she calls. but yeah I was taking that tang, Hippo, pallet surgeon, blue tang, regal tang, royal blue tang, whatever you want to call it for the price of a damsel.

Many of the Petco stores are in the process of dropping the saltwater program since they obviously have terrible employees handling the saltwater program and many fish are dying or not being sold or handled correctly!!!
I feel sorry for their lack of knowledge and the fish at hand being kept under less than optimal conditions!!!
I recently saved a Naso Tang from the local Petco in my area, by purchasing it!!!

bummer....too far for me..i am new to the saltwater hobby, and have gotten a few things at Petco....i have been really careful and selective because i have heard the stories about disease etc. I have gotten 2 clownfish.....and a crab there.....the only reason i have been going to petco is because their prices have been much lower than the LFS around town. once i get a few things in my tank i probably will stop going there unless i can set up a quaranteen....i know most people say this is a must have, but i don't have the resources for that yet...i am still slowly but surely getting everything i need for the main tank....i am just getting my sump going and still need a lot of live rock...

I am sure that the reason the petco's have been resetting their fish sections to reduce the amount of saltwater selection is not because of "terrible employees" but because it makes great business sense.

When you're going to start dropshipping livestock, why bother using valuable retail space to actually hold the fish? That's redundant and wastes money when you don't have to.

I assure you, petco is not leaving the saltwater arena.

Hey buddy, I'm just curious since your post comes into play on another discussion we were having in a different thread. The other LFS where the prices are higher, what kind of quality is the livestock? Thanks.

my girlfriend worked at petco breifly in cranberry twp,pa. they had a tidepool sump for the whole wall with just a biowheel and nothing else ,and ran carbon in a hang on canister filter for 2 hours a month.their fish don't live as long as other lfs livestock and they loose alot of them in the tanks do to that they only feed them algae no matter what fish they are and they often kill each other to make enough space for themselves.my gf tried to reason with them then quit since she really was'nt their for the pay check.the person in charge of the fish is generally interested when i gave advice but she says theres only so much she is aloud to do.thats about all i know about the subject.

I'm glad you were able to give him a better home than PetCo! I've have seen how they house their Tangs and it's appaling! A 10g (or even less) tank and they have like 6 Tangs in there! I was always upset with their lack of knowledge in the fish department. When I was first starting out in the saltwater world, I would go there for them to do a water check and the girl would just point to a color and say "This is where you water is." or "This is in the pink level":-/ Never again will I go there for fish!
