Does base rock need to be cooked when putting it in a new tank with a combo of live rock, or can you just put it in?

I doesn't need to be cooked. There is nothing harmful on it. I would however recommend washing it of with a garden hose to blow off the excess grit and gravel so it doesn't cloudy up your water.

I would personally use RO water to rinse it... but yeah. That's the ticket :)

Good idea, I am on well water and this is for a small tank so I can just use some of my distilled water.

i used RO water to rinse it and then soaked it in RO water with maxijet for a week with whole bottle of purple up. It was about 70 pounds of rock.

Its only been a month and i see pink coraline on it already.

where did you get this rock from. I got mine from reefcleaners.org

I am ordering from reefcleaners.org also. Since I have such a small tank the cost of LR from my lfs is not that much, but I really like the look of reefcleaners base rock, it seems very porous and looks like the pieces would set pretty good as a base.

One month and pink coraline, hope I can repeat that. What is purple up, sorry new to all this.

purple up is a liquid that helps to speed up the coraline growth . imo , no real need for it if you are using some live rock in conjunction with the base. the coraline will spread by itself. and you might end up cursing the growth. lol

a handful of people like purple up... I for one think it is a scam.

purple up is a bottle of Mg and Ca. things you need to maintain for a reef anyway... there are far cheaper ways to keep your levels on target.

now the idea of soaking your base rock with it first... that is new to me... I suppose it could soak it up and then slowly leech it back out... interesting twist... i have no comment on if it will work in that way or not...

I would just skip it alltogether and is what i recommend.
