Ive heard of people running vinigar through new equiptment to cut the manufacturers oils. I would assume that if I do this I should run the addition in clean water for a while before I add it to my setup. My question is, will this break down oils and is this even a good idea? Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

I've never heard of that. Most people usually let the equipment soak in vinegar to get rid of corailline algae. I soak mine every 4-6 months because of algae growth.

here's a bump for you though

The vinegar bath should remove the oils, then just rinse with tap water and you should be good to go.Any remaining small traces of vinegar will not harm your tank.

BTW,a 50/50 mix of vinegar and water should work fine for removing oils.
