still being a fairly uninformed newbie , ive got a question regarding dosing mag, calcium and dkh. will introducing this through my sump dilute or make the supplements less effective? i run a phos and carbon reactor there , plus my skimmer will pick up parts of it. im just wanting to make sure this is a good way to go, or just staright into my DT. i dont do dkh into it, thats sump added. all responses appreciated as im still needing to learn , and hopefully others could learn too. thnx innadvance.

toadstool leather, finger leather, java brain , 2 green star polyps, plain zoas. bubble coral , frogspawn , tricolored ricordia , aussie acans

IMPO if this is all the coral you have I would not dose just do regular water changes once a week 10% and you will be ok dosing is for the corals that eat up the minerals like sps would be calcium chalices magnesium ect. with all the soft corals you will be ok with just water changes I listen to someone when I first started and I have not a hard coral in the tank I was on a dosing plan and almost nuked my tank as my CA was @ 800. from there I only did water changes and everything grew like crazy. I did 10% a week replenished all my trace elements and ca mag and alk. just my .02

thnx lv. the real reason i asked this, and i should have mentioned it. was im tryin to do without water changes. theres been a big discussion about this a few months ago regarding this . and im trying it. all my other params are stable, ammonia , phosphates. nitrites and nitrates. mqain reason im asking this is when i add mag, i see this like "oil' slick when 1st introducing , and the calcium is klike a snowstorm , so just wanting to make sure i can just do it in my sump and still reap the benfits.

basically, dont dose without appropriate test kits. I add everything to my sump, my skimmer is fed by a return line so I just shut that off for about an hour after i feed or dose anything. its kind of cool watching cloudy stuff come up through the returns, I can check out my flow and adjust for any dead spots.

yes different days. i went with swimming pool reasoning for that, add chlorine 1 day, next algaecide to get full benefits. doing the same with my tank. again is is better to add through sump or straight into DT?

reason I say different days or even different parts of the day will work also. Is because you will get to know your tank and it's needs. I peronally have one of my tanks on a bionic schedule where I left it alone for a week and tested it everyday that week to see the changes in all my params. so after my sunday water change. I dose again on tues and then again on thurs. and leave until sunday. everything is stable once I add something I have to start the process all over. here is my schedule for the week

    sun. water change
mon. mag as I like mine high with my chalices
    tues Bionic
    weds ph buffer
    thurs b ionic & mag
    friday alk
sat iodine one cap full since I do not test for it I do not recommend this unless you test. as for the reason I do it the day before a water change
    sunday starts all over again.....

I never dose trace elements although I do have a bottle of it I never add it...

for you if you are trying to minimize your water changes I would leave it alone for week test all params you want to dose for and see what the difference is. add one on say monday test everyday to see the readings then do the math as if too high to low ect. and work it that way ppl get away with water changes for once a month. I change mine everyweek to keep nitrates down and phos and also replenish my trace elemnets as I over feed. blame me I like my fish fat and healthy. :))
