Yeah dude, you're not being bashed. When we post our opinions on a situation, many of us just flat out do not sugarcoat our answers. Too much typing involved. If we didn't care, we wouldn't post.....OK???;D Alright......going forward.....From the way your thread was started it appeared this was a new tank and not a transfer. But even then, a transferred tank takes time to mature. Maybe not as long, but it will not be a friendly environment for probably another month or so. Adding mature water will speed things along a little because there are some beneficial bacteria to seed the sand, rock, PHs, overflows, and every other surface in the tank. And it is good you have an old tank to work with. The livestock will be OK then.

    Peace.......John.

Well, I've never been accused of being harsh before so that's a first.

I don't have any articles to show you. I'm going on experience only. The fact is that bacteria colonize on objects like rock, plants, decorations, glass and filter media, not water (at least not in amounts that would make any significant difference IMO). Now, if you were to use a filter from an established tank, then you would definitely see less of a cycle but not much I think. It's never worked for me and I've never heard of anyone using aged water and not still having to endure a 3-4 week initial cycle.

I changed one word from this statement. It's a 2 way street.... And if anyone can find me where the bashing started in this thread I'll give them over 150 karma. This excludes my "harsh" comment.

I would much rather take sand/rock from an established tank than water. The water is just about worthless except for filler.

Man...ask for advice = get advice. I dont see the harshness either. I think you misunderstood concern for tank inhabitants as some sort of slam on your skill. IMHO the reef hobby can have a bad reputation. It can be percieved as selfish to take a creature out of the ocean, put it into a box in your livingroom and call it home. Go to any chain fish store with 30 tanks hooked up to a filter and all the death and disease being reaked on these poor creatures and any good aquarist will shake their head. Having said that, anyone who is worth their weight in our hobby knows, we put blood sweat and tears into perfecting our "pets" home. Please remember that a small sentence in a thread does not give us all the background info about you. First and foremost we dont want anything to die. This is why our fellow 3reefers were concerned. Take a deep breath and think about it all. It is a miracle that we are even able to simulate the ocean in our livingroom at all. They justr want you to succeed.
