questions about moon sand

    dr foster and smith sell a substrate called Tropic Isle Tahitian Moon Sand. their catalog shows the color to be a dark blueish gray. but the website shows it almost black. has any one seen this item and can fill me in a little more? Im just starting out and want to have an almost dark blue substrate. i plan on going with a darker color sceme. any help greatly needed.

    Most likely it is sand from Hawaii.

    I agree with Nautilus here. It is likely from lava sand from Hawaii.

    One thing to remember with dark substrates is that it will absorb light instead of reflecting it so you might want to plan on more intense lighting.

    It's probably black sand from a lava flow!

    I have the Moon Rock from Drs Foster & Smith in my 36 Bow. While very attractive in one sense, it is a pain in that it shows every last spec of debris, and you cannot really siphon it clean. I am now setting up a 110X and intend to stay far away from the moon sand. By the bye - they charge a HUGE extra shipping fee per bag so that it really is cheaper to find a substrate locally.
