I am going to be doing some maintence on my dt tonight. Mainly getting rid of some red slime. I know I will be scraping the top of the sand bed a little. Question is, is their a way to trap the sand and deatris from getting to the sump without having a filter sock? Could I make a sock? None of my LFS's sells them.

To add to the question. I have found the source of my problem (high phoshates) and am running some Kent phos sponge. Just want to get out the loose stuff tonight.

    Something that worked for me...

Using an old Maxi Jet pump with an adapter on the outlet and screen on the suction (fish safe)... I bug the wife for a clean nylon and cut the leg off the nylon...use a rubber band to attach the nylon to the discharge of the MJ and just "dangle" this in the DT to re-circ water through this filter...you'll be surprised how much this will filter out while you cleaning the gravel...

If you don't want it going into the sump, turn off your return pump while you are cleaning.

    That is a good idea.
