my 55g has really bad GHA and its definatley because of high nitrates so i was wondering could i unplug my canister filter and just get away with my two koralias i think it is a koralia 3 and a koralia 1 or 2 it the powerhead (not really sure) it is like 1.75 inches long if that helps at all. I have about 55lbs of live rock no sump or protein skimmer but i do have a refugium so can i do it?

Sure if you have enough rock to support the De-nitrification process . I assume you do not have a sump and then that takes me to I bet you have a weak skimmer on this system with high N03's and po4's . what are you runing the dkh at ? 8 to 9 ?

I would do away with the canister filter altogether as they are nothing more than nitrate factorys. How old are your lights and how often do you feed your DT? I would also look into getting a protein skimmer. jmtc

i run my light for only 6 hours a day and feed my dt every other day and my lights are in good condition 3-4 months old ive figured out that the sole source of my nitrates is the filter but i dont have the money for a skimmer. can my tank survive if i do weekly water changes without the filter?

Well now we know why you are fighting Hair algae . Kick the DKH & Calcium up along with the magnesium get a skimmer and more of a clean up package you are a little shy on their numbers.. Your rocks have bound up fertilizer in them and then they will leech the excess nutrients back out and very slowly and keep the algae fed You have to run a good skimmer . Ever tested your water for high DOC's and yellowing ? The water changes will help but is that water R/O D.I and is it NO# and PO$ free ? But I have no filtration other then a bunch of rocks , You should be good to go if you have enough rock in there ?
You need to work on getting a skimmer its like a car with no breaks at some point they all need to stop . And at some point if left unskimmed all tanks hit a place of critical mass whit DOC build up and using no skimmer that will harm you faster then no cannister filter .

What are you water parameters reading at ?
