DOC = Dissolved Organic Compounds. DKH = Carbonate Hardness (dissolved).

Skimmers remove the DOC. DKH is maintained through the addition of buffers.

DKH, Magnesium and Calcium levels are inter-related.

The question of your canister filter has been answered, so I won't rehash.

Definitely a +1 to follow Tangsters advice. The man knows his stuff.

    Sounds like a plan.:)

One thing to keep in mind. DOCs aren't just a by-product of overfeeding. They are produced by livestock(waste) normally.

I know money is a factor here but a common piece of advice given which bears repeating is the quality of the skimmer. A few extra weeks of water changes to save up for a good model is worth it.

    Good luck!
