The siphon would be above the water line.
I completely agree with powerman about check valve failure, a tiny bit of salt creep can render it useless. With the siphon break if you can see water coming out of it during normal operation it will work as intended, when you see the water flow lacking just brush it off.

Here is how I did mine, i used the elbow so I could direct it to the wall to minimize noise.

dustin: where do you find that little elbow? how often do you need to brush it off when you see the flow slowing down. and how loud is it?

It is a plain old aquarium airline fitting. You can also use the irrigation drip line fittings at Lowes or Home Depot. I have not had to brush it yet, in my 29 I had the same setup and never had to there as well. That being said I still pretend like I have and check it every so often because I am paranoid.

So i just looked at my overflow kit and the elbow came pre-rilled. If i find it too loud i could plug it with silicone and then drill one on the side and do what you did to help reduce noise? Do you think the hole will solve any problems i may have with my 20 gallon sump (overflowing) if i set the water level properly? or should i look to find a 30 gallon?

Yes you could plug the existing.

You should be fine with a 20. If it makes you more comfortable drop your baffles an inch so you have more room for overflow in the sump. With my 55 I only raise about 3/4" when the power is off. The only time I "almost" had a problem was because the return pipe going into the bulkhead was a bit loose so it was trying to drain the full bulkhead into my sump. Just test it out once you get it set up, mark the level when the power is out and leave it off several hour periodically checking it.

Drilling siphon breaks work but if a snail or debris gets into the hole you are SOL best thing to do it have your returns terminate just below water level.

Also +1 against the check valve there really is no place for them on a tank.
