Is it better when a mushroom expands outwards? i saw one on a small piece of rock at the lfs and bought it and the rock for 79 cents! When i put it in my tank it grew to nearly twice the size... i was hoping this is a good thing.

Your lighting may have a direct effect on corals compared to if they have weaker lighting at the lfs, i bought a flowerpot at my lfs size of a tennis ball , after being under my t5 lighting it expanded to the size of half a football, too big for my tank so unfortunatley i had to take it back, but not before i had a little bonus and it spawned in my tank, so now i have one the size of a pea.

I have two mushrooms that at their current biggest are the size of a dime. At night, you can't even see them they're so small. I think it's rad.
