Since most are not, yeah, that is the problem.

A couple years ago my local reef club tested about 20 of them from everyone's collection using a holmes- farley calibration fluid recipe. My old IO square type one was the only one that was correct. All the other swing arm hydrometers were far off from where the real SG was.

Yeah, I'd really attribute it to having 0 adjustment available in the design of them. With refractometers and the electric monitors, there's always a reference + adjustment.

I am looking into getting a refractometer, because i think the swing arms proven to be unreliable.

Test at LFS, and invest in a refractometer. Total precision, and you'll be SO glad you did.

+1, top off with saltwater instead of fresh, or mix a hyper saline solution (Like, 2 cups of salt in a gallon of water, but make sure it's mixed WELL! DO NOT let grandules get in your tank) and put that in, or just mix up so your ATO's water is salt.

But ditch the swing arms and hydrometers. Get a glass hydrometer at a LFS for today, and order a refractometer ASAP. 25-35 dollars, and you'll be SO glad you did, you'll save way more in livestock!

This thread title reminds me of something...

So, a pirate walks into a bar, and the bartender goes:

"Hey, why do you have a ship's steering wheel on your belt buckle?"

    To which the pirate replies:

    "Arrr.... It's driving me nuts!"

I just have to make sure my SG is where it should be when i get the refractometer, I am mixing everything to a freaking T on the instructions and even when I do readings from the buckets the readings come up all over the spectrum, I should be able to get the refractometer when i get paid next week. I havent been able to buy anything as im undergoing bankruptcy court tuesday so ive been behaving. but for sure when i get out i am buying one :)
