Is it ok if i put a 30 gallon heater into a 10 gallon? I'm gonna have a 5 gallon sump as well connected to it but will the 30 gallon heater be too much?

It should be fine. My heater is rated for more than my 29g tank. A heater will only heat until what water is to the set temperature.

I would only be worried if the heater was under-sized. It can only heat so much..

My guess would be oversized is better than undersized

I belieave he means if the heater gets "stuck" on any given setting it could cook things up.

I've read about this happening, but it's not a common occurrence.

As for oversized vs. undersized I would always go the extra mile and make sure it will do its job quickly in case of an emergency.

What brand heater is it, by the way?

If the temp setting fails and the heater stays on it will heat the tank up very fast.

Not likely. Usually when they fail they just stop heating.
