My recently purchased polyps are acting funny. I am thinking it has something to do with my light, or some creature picking on them. They turned quite dark and closed half way, when I say they I only mean maybe five out of the colony. I usually run my lights for about 9 hours to 10 hours, but today I had to do business in another location and left quite early. I turned the lights on at 8 o clock and just turned them off at 1030, I know this is a long time. However, would this turn them darker in color or something else? thanks.

Maybe, theyre prolly just a little stressed from the length of them on..I run my halides sometimes a little longer when girls are over after the bar and wanna see everything..my lights turn off at 2am and sometimes ill leave them on till 4am or so..and i see no ill effects in my corals...did you check water params, if they havent changed then i think everything will be fine..

Thanks Bud, you have been a great help. That's what I was thinking. Everything is on track, so I am betting the light. I mean they are almost black, well half black. One side is beautifully colored and open. The other side of the same polyp is closed and dark in color almost a black.

well when they close, you should see a purple skin type thing, its just the other side of the zoas, and most of the time they are purple..snap a pic, they may just be closed, which is normal, prolly from the long light time..

get a pic and hopefully its not a big deal..

Yeah, I understand the purple part. I mean the tentacles are black also, not a normal close up. I'll just sleep on it and see how the look in the morning. That's all I can do. Leave it up to mother nature.

Black makes me think you may have some algae growing on them. Some times all you need to do is remove that, put in an area of higher flow. They are pretty darn hardy.

They are almost directly in front of the power head though.

hmm..yeah its almost impossible to kill zoas, to an extent, you know what im saying..they are extremely hardy and i have seen them have algae on them for weeks and then open up like nothing was on them,,try and get a cheap red flashlight and at night shine it around in your tank and make sure you dont have anything eating them or messing with them..

Hmm well the black could be fungus as well.

When I have had prolonged closure of polyps, gsp right? I just take the frag and dip it and or scrup it off a little to remove any detritus, algae or sponges.

But gsp can stay closed for awhile and be just fine. I guess you will see how they are in the am.

    Good luck

Ahhh zoanthids, yeah if the problem persist a dip is in order.

Thanks Guys for the help. The night creatures couldn't have done anything, since this happened just today in the daylight.
