    Heat is only an issue during the summer with a completely closed top with no sump or HOB filter. Very few SW tanks are setup this way, so heat and gas exchange are usually not an issue even with the top.

    Also, any top on the tank will affect lighting. Glass etc. will reduce the amount of light that enters the tank. And as the glass builds up with salt creep and film (algae, etc.) the light will reduce further. Frequent cleanings will help. Just something to keep in mind.
