I am going to set up a 125 gallon reef tank with a 30 gallon sump. I will also have an Aqua C ev180 skimmer for my system.
My question is does anyone use these pumps(Quiet One 3000 or 4000) for their return pump and or to run their protein skimmer? Or any of the quiet one pumps for their system. Are they any good, quiet, and cool running? Or is it best to go with a Mag or comporable pump?:-/

ive heard some bad things about the new ones the old ones worked liek champs but the new design is rated very badly, i would recommend a mag drive pump or even a gen x pumps work awesome too i used them both with no problems.

I have a new 3000 on my turtle tank.
The intake is uncovered with no sponge intake screen - that kind of bugs me.

As for noise, it initially was dead quiet, then I used a ball-valve and cranked it down about 25%. This made it upset and it rattled for about 4-5 days before settling down. Now I don't hear it really and it's fine.

I do like that it only uses 40 watts.

If you have to restrict the flow a lot, you might go with something else.

I use a 3000 for my return pump and love the fact that I cant hear it. I'm going to upgrade to a 4000 soon. I think the Mags are probably better for skimmer apps because they use more wattage per GPH but I could be wrong. I've been running my 3000 for 1 yr and have had no problems except if there is a power outtage it sometimes gets magnetic lock up of the impellor like so many of these pumps do. All you have to do is unplug it and replug it to get it running again.
