    Hihi ya'll,
After a reef set back due to forced move to a new apartment, my tank is up and running.
I was at the LPS the other day, where i purchased a few Ocellaris Clownfish,
While there I was checking out a reef display tank they had, which was a mess, overtaken with excessive amounts of Algae, due probably to the owners neglect, and according to a worker, high levels a silicates and phosphates in the water. I asked him, "well whats the solution, and how do i i prevent this from happening in my tank?" His response was that i could shell out 250 bones for a R/O filter from him...you know the drill.
My tank is not overrun with algae, but i have not yet tested the tap H20 at my new place for Phosphates, but im sure they are [high] since i live in the city. I am going to begin researching the principle of Osmosis, with hopes that i may be able to build my own R/O filter...this may be crazy talk to those of you more schooled in this subject, but whatever here i go.
??Any experience with R/O filters would be greatly appreciated????
    ;)

Get one with the deioinization part. RO greatly reduces phosphates and nitrates(food for cyanobacteria), but not silicates. Distilled water or deionized removes silicates.
All three nutrients for algae. Normal amounts may grow green hair, abnormal amounts may increase cyanobacteria(blue/green algae).

Sounds like a hard project . Post some pics if you do it.

I just bought one from airwaterice.com
Got the 75 Typhoon. Many here on the reef have recommended. $214 shipped.

I got a reef master on eBay...started using it and then discovered, when I received my inline TDS meter that it was putting out 90ppm....my tap is 129ppm so it was better, but I felt pretty bad, buy not testing earlier and just trusting the seller as to the age and usage of the filters. Changed out the filters yesterday and am now reading 0ppm. much better.
I see no negative effects form the water changes with the 90ppm...but I did water change this a.m. and will do another on Monday....and then most likely again next weekend.
    Learn as you go....

I ran a test on my Tap yesterday and im in the ballpark of 2mg/L i think...it was tested using an API kit where you add reagents, let it react and then match to a color chart...my color matches halfway up the chart.
