How often does a reverse osmosis membrane need to be replaced? I have a Kent Marine Maxxima - I am replacing all the cartridges 1-particulate cartridge, 1-carbon cartridge, and 1-resin cartridge. Are these the best cartridges to have or are there other options and the whole thing has been just sitting for 5 years - should the membrane be replaced? It was wet the whole time. thanks!! ::)

Do you have a TDS meter? I would check what your TDS reading is. You should be getting a reading of zero or very close to it. If it's way off, then it's time to replace some of your filters.

I would change all the pre filters and test the membrane with a TDS meter.
How do you know it was in water for 5 years?

TDS monitors accurately help you monitor both incoming and outgoing water quality.

These TDS monitors are digital and heldheld making water tests convienent and painless. We carry Hanna Brand instruments, the leaders in the industry. These high quality monitors are fully adjustable (calibration) and incorporate automatic temperature compensation.

TDS monitors make an excellent add on unit for any of our systems. They can assist you in deciphering when your filters need to be changed!

Generally speaking RO membranes will last for two years+,depending on how much you use them. However, they can not sit unused for any prolong amount of time. A bacteria will form on the membrane. I would definitely replace the RO membrane.

They can sit for about a month with water on them and still be ok, but if you need to keep it stored for longer you should put it in a ziploc with some product water. So if I were you I would definitely change it.
