It always seems like my favorite fish stinkin' goes and dies. He is not dead yet. He is breathing very heavily (oxygen levels are fine), not going to sleep at night, laying on top of the sand, but still eating (not as hastily as he used to). I think he might have a problem with his slime layer as there is a certain part of his face that sand and other things always gets stuck to.

Ammonia 0, Nitrite 0, nitrate 17, 79deg, 1.027. The only other fish in the fitty-five is an ocellaris and a bicolorpseudochromis that he never takes any crap from. What do you think his chances are or is there any think I can do to increase them?

If you have a QT tank, you can put him in there with one of the commercial slime coat products. I like Kordon Fish Protector.

1.027 is high. I am gradually lowering it. The other fish are fine. The power strip that feeds all the in-tank-equipment is not grounded. I will try using an extension cord to hook it to a 3prong outlet. And unfortunately, my quarantine cracked and was taken down. I did add an orange tree sponge, but its not dying or rotting. When he first started acting offish I started using a carbon filter in addition to the protein skimmer, thinking maybe the sponge was leaching some unknown toxin.
