The blue LED lights are to be on at night ( moonlights) and the white lights are to be on during the day. so basically this is a 24 hour lighting system correct? I know there are threads but they seem unclear i jus twanted to clear this up. Thanks

    thats basically right

the blue LEDs can stay on all the time if you want, they dont cost much to run , very energy efficient and then at night your other lights can go off daylights and actinics etc

or you can switch the LEDS after you switch of the daylight lamps and before you switch of any actinics you have

I have photo cells on mine they come on when its dark but on my old fixture i would leave the moonlights on 24/7, like steve said they dont cost very much to run, I think there like 1 watt if even that.

well what is the little glow hwen both are off. i was under the wierd impression that was the moonlight (thats what i get for assuming). But the blue LED lights are okay to run full time.

Does anyone use red LEDs? I would think you could add much more red light without disturbing the nocturnal critters than you could with blue lights.... anyone?

Red LEDs are no bueno, just read an article in regards to PAR and DLI and they team of scientists tested pure BLUE RED and INFRARED light on zooxanthellae and noticed that when they used pure RED half of the zooxanthellae did not finish mitosis, meaning they weren't reproducing. The red is definetly too much for critters that have never really seen red spectrum as red is filtered out of water VERY quickly.

Is this an LED fixture or and LED supplemental type unit?

Let's clarify what we are talking about. There are different "types" of LED. I have the small squares (2 LED per square) as "moon" light and I also have Power Bright LEDs that are used as an adjunct to my T5 lights. The Power Brights are probably at least 30 times more intense than "moon" lights although given the proper head room over a large tank can also be used as "moon" lights. If you have the more intense LEDs, no, don't use those for "moon" lights.
