I'm thinking about going with the 48 dimmible DIY kit from rapid LED and putting it on a 35 inch heat sink. Is this overkill for a 65 gallon aquarium? I want to be able to have SPS LPS clams everything. Oh and I will be building a canopy and placing this in there.

    Nope.

Set it up to be dimmable and you'll have a blast :)

Yes, it's overkill. 36 will do you just fine.
