I am in the process of upgrade my 55g fish only to a 90g reef. I have already started building the stand and canopy for it and I am still debating if i want to use the 20L or 30L tank as a sump. What do you guys think?

Here is some pics of the build so far. I still have a long way to go.

Thanks guys. I still have a long way to before I get this thing finished. I am hoping to get the stand and canopy finished this weekend to where I only have paint and stain to do.

What brand and size pump should I put in this tank? I am looking at about 6' of head pressure. I am also still debating on a 20L or a 30L for a sump. I have both tanks.

I'd go with the 30L if it can fit under the stand. As for a pump is it going to be external or internal?

Yeah the 30 will fit. As in for external or internal I have made up my mine yet. I really like the blowhole pump I seen at the reef conference in Tampa. If I decide to go external I will have to see how everything will fit under the stand.

What size should I use? If I remember right I was thinking about the 1100.

That sounds too big unless you're going to use it to power all your reactors and use it for in-tank circulation too. Maybe something about 2/3 that size. I'm certain you'll get some feedback from some folks much more experienced than I, but what I've been hearing lately is you want to calculate return pump size on your sump volume.

Really nice work on the stand. I like the tank recessed like that, looks really clean. What are you planning to do for an overflow?

The blowhole pump has a 3 speed selector switch so I can fine tune the amount of flow I will need. From what I have you need 10x the tank volume through your sump. With a 90g tank that is 900pgh. By the time it goes through 6' of head pressure that 1100 should be close to 900gph. I also have a media reactor that I am thinking about add bio pellets to. I just hope my 1" drain can handle the flow.

Thank you for the compliment. It took a lot work just to figure how I want it to look. I routed the 2 edges my self. It is made up of 2 pieces of wood to get thatthe look. A 1x4 vertical and a 1x2 horizontal. The stand is still missing the 2 side pieces of trim. Hopefully I can figure that part out tomorrow or Sunday.

I have the built in overflow on the 90 so I thought I would put a "t" at the top for the return line and come out of both sides of the over flow.
