Because hobby grade kit's can only test so accurately. There's always some phosphate and nitrates in the water that get used up to a point that test kits can no longer detect them.

The hair algae will feed off the detritus built up in the cracks and crevices of the rock.
You need to pull clumps gently by hand and then use a turkey baster to blow all the junk out of and off the rock to be filtered out in the sump/fuge.

Do this no less than weekly and pretty soon your rocks will look much better

    good luck

new lights, tons of flow, im running a gfo reactor and a fuge lol I pulled a strand of chaeto out from between my eagle eye and fire and ice zoas that was 11 inches long lol. It was started a couple of months ago by a 1/4 inch piece. Its just dumb. Im getting a Scopas tang ive watch chow algea for months to take care of this now lol. Now i just need to get my ember blenny to come out, trick my chitons to let me move them to another rock section, and feed my clown goby to a shark before my acros die

The nitrates and phosphates aren't in the water, so you can't read them with a test. They're being used up by the algae.

I had some intense algae like this once. Raising my magnesium helped quite a bit and manually removing giant clumps. I'd try that and stay the course. Took like 4-5 weeks to get rid of it.
