How quickly did you raise it and how high did you raise it?

I wonder why raising magnesium kills it off. Magnesium isn't a toxic metal at high concentration. What impurities are in the Kent mag supplement? Toxic metals (Cu, Zn, Cd) often gain access to the cell via the cellular transport system of nutrient metals (Mg, Ca etc). So the high magnesium concentration may just function as a path for the toxic impurities to get into the cell.

It's not the Mg level that works on bryopsis, it's the magic of Kent Tech-M. There's something in it which actually kills the bryopsis, not the Mg level itself.

And I never had any problems with chaeto die off either when using it. That seems strange Marshall; definitely not typical.

    I raised it ~100ppm/day up from 1300 to 1600.

Weird then. Maybe just a coincidence? I then had to work insane hours for a few weeks, and so stopped dosing/testing after it reached 1600ppm.

Very rarely do you get to say that a "mysterious substance" in a reef supplement is a good thing lol

Yes, this thread has scared me off Kent products even more than I already was. Since this mystery substance is likely an impurity in Kent Tech-M, I wonder if it is consistently present in the product.

I would have to imagine that it is consistently present because plenty of people have used it to kill off bryopsis. On the other hand though, I know plenty of people who have used it and had no ill effects on their livestock or system.
