No offense but I wouldn't blame the liverock for that......
Base rock cannot become liverock with out some live rock in there to "seed" it, unless you bought so much live coral that had hitch hikers on it, but still all base rock would tank a very long time to encrust w/ coraline and the like, at least use SOME live rock!

Good luck all, esp. w/ the bryopsis!!

My advice is to take Frag's advice. Get your rock in there, let your tank cycle and test your water. DO NOT put anything in the tank until you have researched, researched, researched! How long have you been reading up on the hobby? I read for about 4 months endlessly before I even bought any equipment. Get yourself a good book, and read it from cover to cover four times over. "The Concientious Marine Aquarist," is a good one. I feel your confusion is from lack of knowledge. There is so much to know about htis hobby, and there are things you will not be prepared for, but you need to know the basics before you take the plunge. Get your tank cycling like Frag said, and get that book and read until it sinks in, and keep posting on 3reef, we'll help you!

co-sign that..get you some live rock and some base rock and work on aquascaping until the cycle is done.

during the cucle you will see a lot of interesting new things from your live rock.

    good luck.

Yep I researched for about 3 months before buying a tank. Then 1-2 weeks after buying the tank we finally actually put rock and water in it. Research research research.

People tell you to research but that means nothing if you don't point them in the right direction.

Skim through these forms and read all the articles that you think are important.

Also go to reefkeeping.com and read all the issues, especially the older ones on maintenance and diy projects.

You can also visit reefcentral and read up on forums there. and when you ask questions here, try to be as specific as possible because you will get a bunch of vague answers

Exactly as I said... research and keep posting.. we'll help. Researching in this hobby never stops, it seems there is always something new and to catch you off guard. There's a lot to know in this hobby.

No one told me to research or how to research. Google is just amazing, that's all ;)

    Here is my library

The Reef Aquarium 2 volumes Sprung and Deelbeck
Marine Plants of the Caribbean- A Field guide from Florida to Brazil
Anemone Fishes and their host Sea anemones Fautin & Allen
    Giant Clams Knopp
    Natural Reef Aquariums Tullock
    The Conscientious Marine Aquaruist Fenner
    Your First Marine Aquarium Tullock

I had a reef aquarium10 years ago, and I have been reading since I decided to start up a tank again. But nobody advises whether their is a point to running a 250 W 18000K Halide while you are waiting for the protein skimmer to be built. I don't know if nitrosomas or nitrobactor are light dependent.

I have a bit of ammonia (btwn .1 and .3) due to the live sand coming in a 40 lb bag. (not so live after all) but I did add 10 lb of fresh sand from my LFS.

I apologize if my question came across as if I didn't know what equipment I would need.
