So..at the LFS I go to, I have been discouraged from buying a lot of fish because I dont have a closed top to my tank. I have met some people with a lot of the fish I was told would jump out in their tanks...who also dont have lids.

Is it a real concern or just a freak possibility? Sorry for not specifying which fish. The only one I can remember is the fire fish.

It is of concern. I know at my local fish store they had a wrasse in their coral flat that jumped out during the night when they weren't there and he died. They were pretty distraught but at the same time they knew the risks.

Nope a real concern. It will happen eventually.

Wrasses, Gobies and Dartfish are all big jumpers.

I lost my 3 year old clown fish after leaving the lid up for 10 min.
Never buy a Blue Spotted Jawfish without a lid, even with a lid mine found one tiny spot and jumped 3 days after purchase. A beautiful fish and 110 bucks lost.

You can just build a screen lid. Do a search in "I made this" forum here on 3reef.

Works great, no fish jump, allow gas exchange, does not fog, and allow in light.

Yes major concern...don't discount triggers from everyone I know with triggers they're jumpers.also lionfish and scorpions aswell. I will never have another open top tank again.....if you lik those fish look into a mesh lid/s they're easy and cheap to make. Bulkreefsupply has a good deal on the kits

Awesome, I love the mesh Idea. I will get on that ASAP, I think I will use thin wood instead of plastic, I need to see what I have lying around.
    Thanks!

Wouldn't the plastic lighting thing with holes in it from HD or Lowes work to or are the holes to big?
