No oil; fish, fish shadow and some bubbles. The water by the beach is nothing like the water off shore.

You could buy a decent RO/DI filter for the cost of refilling a 60 gallon tank two times. It seems like it would add up fast. If you keep everything in good working order, the only cost would be salt and a few cents for city water.

If it were cheaper, I would say maybe go for it. Also is it sterilized? I would be too worried about something slipping in. I mean, for every beneficial microorganism that slips in, a bad one could too.

Geeze I dont know, the critters we have in our tanks come from the ocean, yet most everyone here thinks synthetic water is better? Every zoo that I know of uses true ocean water.

Many types of coral and fish will not survive long w/o actual ocean water.

It is believed that this is also why flower pot corals do not live long in aquariums using synthetic water.

If I had the chance, I would use only ocean water, that I would then filter thru a sock system, this way all the good stuff would still be there.

The composition of ocean water varies greatly, especially between 'open ocean' water and 'reef water' which is much higher in salinity and nutrients.

For purposes of home aquariums, if your planning on keeping more than just fish... I think open ocean water would be sub-par to introduce into the system, especially considering the 'human polutants' added to the open ocean water.

I think your better off getting good local water and de-chlorinating it and adding specialized salt than using open ocean water.

especially considering it costs a whopping 13 bucks at my LFS for a 5 gallons of random ocean water... if it doesn't say it was taken from a reef environment I'm not buying it.

Now you can have your $0.98 cents back...
