no. but the nitrates from the sand may. and they may harm your coral. Alot of times if you have rock sitting in the same place for a while, detritus gets stuck where the base of the rock tucks under the sand. When you lift the rock up you will see the brown sand stir into the tank. Its not horrible for your tank but it is waste that is being broken down so its not good. Good idea to do a water change after you move everything around. Just be easy when moving crap around. It helps to get a big rubbermaid bin or similar to hold your rocks/coral while your aquascaping. You don't want to scratch your tank up by leaving all the rocks in while your moving stuff around.

is it a deep sand bed or relatively shallow?
do you vacuum it at all on a regular basis?
how long has it been set up?

not sure if these questions are relevant or not, Im just nosey.

I just wanna get some shelter for some fish as I have a pretty lateral design with really no places for fish to hide

Not really sure what I could do with it but I wanna try something so my fish can feel a little more secure

There might not really be anything to do with it because the pieces are so big.

After only 3 months you should be fine. Just as mattheuw1 states, just do your best to keep stirring to a minimum when moving.

its a 3 month old tank with maybe 2 inches of sand (IMO you dont have a problem deep sand beds are a whole different matter as is any sand bed thats been located for a long time )

what fish have you got ( I cant see any in photo)
I cant see any corals either?

so what you could do is purchase some more base rock, different sized pieces large and small and then re aquascape your tank to your taste

its early days in your set ups life so changes you want to make can be made now, without major issues IME

well in that case jturnbull , bearing the comments made by matheuw and confirmed by Reef Sparky in mind - I reckon your good to go - but you may need a bit more base rock to achieve what you want
